Veteran actor James Earl Jones (left) was presented with a lifetime achievement award by Forest Whitaker (right).
Heath Ledger was named best supporting actor for his role in The Dark Knight. Gary Oldman (left) accepted the award on his behalf.
30 Rock star Tina Fey was named best TV comedy actress, the same award she won at the Golden Globes earlier this month.
Best actor nominee Mickey Rourke turns on the charm with best actress hopeful Angelina Jolie. Sadly, both left empty-handed. Sean Penn joked about his award's "heavy package" as he accepted his best actor prize for biopic Milk.
The British success continued with House star Hugh Laurie being named best actor in a drama series for the second time.
Slumdog Millionaire stars (l-r): Dev Patel, Irrfan Khan, Freida Pinto and Anil Kapoor celebrate winning the award for best overall cast. Kate Winslet missed out on the best actress prize, though, which went to Meryl Streep for her work in religious drama Doubt.
