Nigeria's Heartland FC are back in style in Africa's foremost competition after they trounced Black Stars of Liberia 4-0 in a Caf Champions League first round, first leg match in the southeast town of Owerri on Sunday. The host team opened scoring after just two minutes through experienced defender Ike ThankGod, who rose above the Liberians' defence to head home from a freekick. There were also goals from Ghanaian imports, Addae Owusu and Aziz Ansah, who netted from the penalty spot on 46 minutes. Stanley Okoro was also on target for the team formerly known as Iwuanyanwu Nationale. Heartland coach, Okey Emordi, said he is now looking beyond the first round. "I expected a lot more from my team but the Liberians put up a fight especially in the second half. All the same, I don't expect any problems in the return leg in Liberia," said Emordi. In other Champions League matches, Angola's Primeiro Agosto beat Renaissance Aiglons (Congo-Brazzaville) 5-2, Supersport United (South Africa) defeated Curepipe (Mauritius) 3-0 and Monomatapa (Zimbabwe) beat Miembeni (Zanzibar) 2-0. Petro Atletico (Angola) trounced Royal Leopards (Swaziland) 3-0 and AS Douanes (Senegal) were 3-1 winners over Ports Authority (Sierra Leone).
